EMMA (Energy and Micro-Generator Manager)
With the new FIT tariffs EMMA increases the value of over half of the output of your micro-generator by more than 100% and in many cases by more than 500%.
"Surplus" power is used to displace purchased fuel and/or imported powerWith the new FIT tariffs EMMA increases the value of over half of the output of your micro-generator by more than 100% and in many cases by more than 500%.
If you don't use EMMA over 50% of the output from your micro-generator will be exported because of the mismatch between output (which is determined by nature) and demand (which is determined by you). This exported power is only worth c.3p per kWh.. at most. In many cases this is worth nothing. EMMA uses the power that would be otherwise be exported to heat you hot water... thereby displacing fuel or power that would otherwise cost you between 6p and 14p per kWh.
"Free" Hot Water from your micro-generator
EMMA enables you to generate electricity and hot water from your micro-generator. It eliminates the need for solar thermal installations.
The basic function performed by EMMA is the conversion of low value surplus micro-generator output into a higher value import substitute. When the new FIT comes into effect the low value surplus output will be worth either nothing or c.3 p/kWh. It will be worth nothing where electricity supply companies are paying for the exported power on the basis of an estimate (because it costs more than c.3 p/kWh to track and trade small intermittent, uncontrollable amounts of electricity).
The import substitute in a energy-efficient all-electric houses is worth c.14 p/kWh. In an inefficient house or a house that uses a wood, oil or gas burning boiler to provide hot water it is worth slightly less. So the value of the EMMA processed power is in the region of 10 to 14 p/kWh.
The amount of EMMA processed power is typically 50-60% of total annual micro-generator output..... occasionally more. The EMMA SP15 is suitable for use with PV array or turbine with a capacity of up to 4 kW. A properly designed 4 kW PV array will generate c.4,000 kWh per annum in the Southern half of the UK.... and c.3,600 kWh in the North. A properly placed 4 kW wind turbine will generate c.10,000 kWh per annum. The annual surpluses are thus 1,800 to 2,400 kWh for a PV array and 5,000 to 6,000 kWh for a wind turbine. The values of these surpluses are, thus, between €180 and €840 per annum. The EMMA SP15 retails at c.€1,000. The annual ROI is thus between 18% and 84%... plus annual energy inflation.
In addition to the above... EMMA brings a number of other energy and money saving benefits such as improved management of hot water storage and improved information about energy usage. It also gives the owner of the micro-generator an ability to control the power they are generating... which is seen as being very desirable by many of our customers.
When smart meters come into play the addition of a communications module together with a software upgrade will enable EMMA to operate as a smart import/export optimiser."
